Arrythmias

Last Updated On Friday, March 28, 2025

Arrhythmias are also known as dysrhythmia. Arrhythmias is an irregular heartbeat due to malfunctioning of the heart's system. In arrhythmias, the heart beats either too fast too slow, or erratically, which eventually reduces its ability to pump blood efficiently throughout the body. Arrhythmias can range from benign and harmless to life-threatening conditions. An irregular heartbeat seems as if the racing of the heart is very fast or slow. Some other factors, for example, if you exercise, your heart beats very fast, and when you sleep, the heartbeat becomes slow; it is a natural phenomenon and doesn't relate to arrhythmias.

Arrhythmias Types:

The arrhythmias are divided into the following types according to their differentiation in their symptoms. There are two major types of arrhythmias which are:

Tachycardia

In this malfunctioning of the heart. The heart beats swiftly or way too fast. The beats are recorded as 100 beats /min. The disorder related to fast heart beating is given below.

    • Atrial fibrillation (AFib): The very first type of arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation. This type is a chaotic, irregular heartbeat that often causes palpitations, shortness of breath, and fatigue. It is the most common type of arrhythmia and can increase the risk of stroke if left untreated.
    • Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT): In this type of arrhythmia, a rapid heartbeat starts to form in the upper chambers of the heart, and it causes heart palpitations and lightheadedness.
    • Ventricular tachycardia (VT): It is the fast or rapid heartbeat that usually occurs in the lower chambers of the heart, which causes the quiver, which is a hurdle to pumping blood into the body properly.

Bradycardia:

In this type of arrhythmia, the heart beats in a very slow rhythm with beats of 60/min.

    • Sick sinus syndrome: It is a type of bradycardia the heart beats too slowly and damages the sinus nodes of the heart, which helps in the pace of the heart.it is due to the making of the scarring along the sinus nodes, which eventually slows the heart rate.
    • Conduction block: In this condition, the pathways of the heart that process the signal suddenly make the heart beat very slow
    • Long QT Syndrome (LQTS): It is a rare and life-threatening heart condition that affects the electrical signals of the heart, causing an abnormally long interval between beats. It can lead to fainting or sudden death due to cardiac arrest.

Arrhythmias Causes:

There are many causes of these arrhythmias. However, in sporadic cases, there is no known cause for an arrhythmia. These are called idiopathic arrhythmias. It's important to talk to your doctor about any possible underlying conditions or risk factors contributing to the development of an arrhythmia. Some of the highlighted underlying reasons for the arrhythmias are mentioned below:

  • Heart disease or damage to the heart muscle due to an infection, a genetic condition, or a previous history of heart attack;
  • High blood pressure.
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Diabetes
  • Hormonal imbalances;
  • Certain medications and drugs;
  • Structural problems in the heart, such as overgrowing cells or tissue in the atria (the upper chambers of the heart)
  • Abnormal nerve signals sent to the heart from another part of your body
  • Hyperactive thyroid gland or hormones, which are also known as hyperthyroidism
  • Another major cause of arrhythmias is excessive smoking.
  • Consuming alcohol can also affect the beating of the heart.
  • If you take anti-allergy drugs frequently, you will likely have an abnormal heartbeat.

Cardiac Arrhythmia Symptoms:

There is a high chance that your body doesn't show any prominent or noticeable symptoms of cardiac arrhythmias. Sometimes only doctors can notice the irregularity of your heartbeat; however, some of the most common symptoms of this disease are:

  1. Trembling in the chest
  2. Very fast or rapid beating of the heart, which is known as tachycardia
  3. The slow beating of the spirit is named bradycardia.
  4. Pain in the chest
  5. Exhaustion or shortness of breath
  6. Anxiety
  7. Severe fatigue
  8. Dizziness
  9. Heavy sweating
  10. Fainting.

Can arrhythmias be cured?

The arrhythmias can be cured with proper diet and medication, or in some cases, it doesn't require any treatment. You just need to change your lifestyle. However, your doctor will guide you better. The treatment of this disease includes the following types of medication such as:

  •  Anti-arrhythmic drugs or medication are used to treat irregular heartbeat and make your heartbeat normal.
  • The drugs that control heart racing or rate are also a way to treat abnormal heart racing.
  • The medical treatments for arrhythmias also include warfarin or aspirin, also known as antiplatelet therapy.

Several therapies also help in the treatment of arrhythmias which are:

  • Electrical cardioversion: in this treatment, the doctor ill passes an electrical impulse into your chest walls which coincides with the heart, which returns a normal heartbeat.
  • Catheter ablation: in this procedure, very high-frequency electrical waves or energy passes with the help of a catheter in the small area of the heart's tissues which are responsible for the abnormal rhythms of the heart.
  • Pulmonary vein isolation: this therapy generates the rings of scars that leave the foci, which are the reason behind atrial fibrillation.
  • Is arrhythmia dangerous?

Some types of arrhythmia are not dangerous at all, but some symptoms can indicate the seriousness of this disease. For example, if a very fast or too slow heartbeat is frequently happening, it will lead to low blood pumping into the body, often leading to stroke or heart disease. It is better to consult your doctor if you have the very slightest or major symptoms of the arrhythmias to get treatment on time.
